Sat watching a film last night when the biggest moth i've ever seen flew in through the open door (sounds like the begining of a joke dosen't it). It flew around for a bit then landed on some cut flower in the lounge.

After a a flick through our insect book it turns out it is a "Poplar hawk moth". they are quite common in the south of egland but are mainly seen in damp places such as by rivers. It has a 3" wing diameter and I couldn't stop looking at it because it was so beautiful.

I saw one of those on King Street in Nottingham - it was harrassing people in a bus shelter; they thought it was a bat...
Have you seen the caterpillars for these beauties? They're like miniature snakes.
